Topic: Los Angeles Promise Zone: Relevance and Importance
Description: In January 2014, the City of Los Angeles and lead partner Youth Policy Institute were awarded a federal Promise Zone designation from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. Los Angeles is one of only three cities in the nation to receive this new designation. The LA Promise Zone initiative includes 48 public and private partners that signed a shared Memorandum of Understanding and committed to investing over $380 million in public and private capital to support achieving Promise Zone goals.

Bio: Dixon Slingerland is the Executive Director of the Youth Policy Institute (YPI). Dixon has directed YPI since 1996, and now leads more than 1,300 staff serving over 100,000 youth and adults each year at 125 program sites in Los Angeles. Dixon is a nationally recognized leader in creating place-based strategies designed to combat intergenerational poverty, by saturating targeted services in communities where they are needed most.
